Emilio Del Guidice and Giuliano Preparata[10.] have shown through the mathematics of quantum electrodynamics (QED) that radiation exchange between water molecules can lead to domains or regions in the water within which the natural oscillations of all the water molecules become synchronised or coherent. Furthermore, Del Guidice has pointed out that within such a coherent system, the constant parameter for radiation is no longer the velocity of light but the coherence length or size of the domain. This makes the frequency of a wave in a coherent system proportional to its velocity; there may be many velocities and proportionate frequencies all of which may interact. It is this which brings molecular spectra interactions in water down into the range of technological frequencies.

What is being remembered in water (or other potentisable medium) is a pattern of frequencies. Understanding of this came from my frequency measurements on the n-alkane series of straight chain hydrocarbons (the best known is "octane" used for petrol rating). The n-alkanes have their only spectrum in the far infra-red which means that any interaction with water must be in this region too. Their chemical signatures appear when more than about 16 ppm of water is present and these relate to the difference between far infra-red spectral lines of the n-alkanes and the lines of the water-laser.

If there is no n-alkane present, a pair of water-laser lines can behave in the same way. When water is potentised, these natural resonances split to give the sum and difference frequencies of the potency. Water behaves like a blank sheet of paper on which any pattern of frequencies can be written and living systems can read this as bio-information. I have described in detail elsewhere the various methods whereby the copying, erasure and synthesis of potencies can be performed[11.] as well as arithmetical operations on them. [12.]

It is important to repeat that water memory requires the presence of the geomagnetic field so that even briefly placing a potency inside a closed steel box (e.g. biscuit tin, a steel filing cabinet or cupboard) will erase it. It does not erase the frequency signatures of chemicals.

Potencies may transfer to water by contact between glass vials or, be overwritten or erased with the body frequency pattern of a person handling them. In the majority of homoeopathic trials, there seems to have been no attempt at quality control of the potency or of the placebo, which may have become potentised too. Furthermore, double-blinding is meaningless if hypersensitive persons are at all involved because they can immediately distinguish verum from placebo.

Nurses will be aware that some patients cannot tolerate the body fields (aura) of a particular nurse and, with no offence, they need to have a nurse whom they find tolerable. A similar problem can occur between a mother and child whom she cannot nurse. These effects can be neutralised.

A phase II trial of Reiki for the management of pain in advanced cancer patients.

This trial compared pain, quality of life, and analgesic use in a sample of patients with cancer pain (n=24) who received either standard opioid management plus rest (Arm A) or standard opioid management plus Reiki (Arm . Participants either rested for 1.5 hr on Days 1 and 4 or received two Reiki treatments (Days 1 and 4) one hour after their first afternoon analgesic dose. Visual analogue scale (VAS) pain ratings, blood pressure, heart rate, and respirations were obtained before and after each treatment/rest period. Analgesic use and VAS pain scores were reported for 7 days. Quality of life was assessed on Days 1 and 7. Participants in Arm B experienced improved pain control on Days 1 and 4 following treatment, compared to Arm A, and improved quality of life, but no overall reduction in opioid use. Future research will determine the extent to which the benefits attributed to Reiki in this study may have been due to touch.

RESEARCH IN HOMEOPATHY?

In two experiments, mice (n 5 98) were injected with
double the level of methylcholanthrene necessary to induce
fatal sarcoma (The Jackson Laboratories; strain, Balb/C;
background, H-2d). Results indicated that the “laying-on of
hands” technique could produce remission regardless of
variation in group size, treatment length, and treatment frequency
(Bengston, 2003).
Why is this relevant? In all six experiments, a significant
percentage of control mice exhibited these anomalous remissions
of their cancerous tumors, even though they were not directly
treated by the “laying-on of hands” technique. Indeed,
normal (fatal) tumor growth only occurred when the control
animals were housed in a different building, were sent to another
city, or were placed into a geographically separated
“clean” laboratory. In the mammary adenocarcinoma experiments,
for example, 87.9% of the animals treated by “layingon
of hands” went through the tumor regression pattern to full
cure. This also happened to 69.2% of the control animals. When
I have shown my data to interested parties, almost invariably
the first question asked is whether these differences are statistically
significant. Indeed, within the paradigmatic assumptions
of what Oberbaum et al. (2003) call Aristotelian research, this
is the appropriate question to ask. But this belies the fact that
under normal circumstances the tumors are 100% fatal.
Significance, or treatment efficacy, here takes on an entirely
different meaning. In these experiments, it is not the
difference between the experimental and control groups that
is the important question, it is the difference between what
happened and what ought to have happened. What ought to
have happened is that all the mice should have died. The
fact that so many control mice remitted doesn’t diminish the
efficacy of treatment; rather it cries out for an alternative
model of understanding.
I propose that understanding will be found in a theory
of resonance that I am in the process of developing. Under
the right conditions, groups of mice can be “resonantly
bonded” together into an organic whole. Among the consequences
of resonant bond formation is that what happens
to one mouse in the group affects what happens to all the
other mice in that group. When this occurs, the classic assumption
of complete separation into experimental and
control groups becomes problematic. Hence, anomalous
healing to an experimental mouse brought about via “laying-
on of hands” will by extension affect control mice
within the resonant group.
The problem then becomes bond formation and destruc-
tion. My initial speculation is that these bonds can be formed
in at least two ways. First, through similar experience among
the animals, something akin to the “morphic resonance” hypothesis
proposed by Sheldrake (1995). Second, by the consciousness
of the experimentor, who can, perhaps inadvertently,
define and delimit the boundaries of the group.
Animals can also be dissonantly separated from the group
by geographical distance, and by selected changes in the
consciousness of the human operators.
If I am correct, then there ought to be numerous applications
of these resonant bonds in experimental research.
Perhaps some of the anomalies in placebo research are examples
(Walach, 2001)? Perhaps research in homeopathy is
yet another application?

Clinical Example

Carrie was a 35-year-old married woman who came into therapy because she felt communication between her and her husband was very poor. Initially, she had hoped that her husband would come into sessions with her so that she could understand why conversations with him left her feeling so helpless and frustrated. He, however, was unwilling to participate beyond the first meeting, believing that the issues were hers and had nothing to do with him. Carrie decided to continue on her own, hoping that, as she began to understand herself she could participate more clearly in the marriage and communication might improve.

At first, Carrie focused on her husband's reactions or nonreactions to her behavior, using this as the gauge to what was appropriate or needed to be changed. Evidently her husband Joe was a coolly analytical individual who would withdraw from her whenever she became too "emotional" (angry or upset) and would periodically drink heavily and become verbally abusive. Carrie wanted to avoid this behavior and felt responsible for his reaction and his drinking. Even though she was able to function in a full-time position as a leader and teacher out in the working world, she could not seem to maintain that level of self-confidence at home. Long years of criticism, self-doubt, and a deep sense of responsibility related to her early years made it very difficult for Carrie to separate her own needs from her husband's. Focusing and quieting her mind when interacting with him seemed to be a difficult task that she wanted to accomplish very badly but seemed powerless to do.

In addition to psychotherapeutic approaches, Reiki was introduced as a tool to promote relaxation and focusing, and to help Carrie get a clearer sense of her self. A number of Reiki treatments were given in sessions and as Carrie began to find the experience calming and centering, she wanted to do more of it at home as well as in sessions, feeling that it would help her deal with the stress of the relationship. First, she practiced the hand positions at home and later signed up for the initial training course of 2 days so that she could enhance her ability. After that, she would do a Reiki treatment on herself every morning. Taking this time every morning seemed to give her new insights into her issues of dependence and self-esteem so that therapy sessions became more focused and productive.

Over time, Carrie felt internally calmer and more confident about her ability to deal with her husband as well as express her feelings without guilt or fear. Because she found Reiki so productive, she introduced it to her husband and began giving him treatment every week. Eventually he took the training course as well and they began to give each other treatment every week. This quiet time together seemed to be most helpful in decreasing the tension between them and provided a moment where they were able to connect energetically. Having this respite gave them a chance to view their differences with a certain level of detachment. Periods of conflict began to be explored as issues they both needed to understand and resolve rather than as personal failures they needed to punish each other for.

Over time, Carrie and her husband did not come to a resolution that saved their marriage, but the process that they used to get there seemed less fraught with the need to hurt each other. Throughout, Carrie was able to grow in self-confidence and use the trauma of change and loss to connect with earlier experiences that had not been resolved.

In this example, Reiki was a supportive adjunct to the therapeutic interaction, providing a greater opportunity for the client to feel empowered and responsible in the process. Using this approach expanded the scope of treatment and enhanced the healing opportunities, both in and out of the therapeutic session. Incorporating this touch therapy had a positive effect on both client and therapist and is an important tool to consider whenever the therapist is willing and interested in expanding their experience.
